Project details

Following a devastating fire at The Mall in Walthamstow, the DE Group were called upon, alongside the emergency services and forensics teams, to assess the structure and make safe the dangerous conditions.

We were then tasked to create separation between the undamaged areas of the mall and the resultant construction zone to allow the partial re-opening of the centre.

Following a successful partial re-opening and a period of close collaborative working with the client’s professional team, insurers and loss adjusters, De Group Contracting were awarded the contract for extensive re-construction and refurbishment works. The client and the centre management team were delivered a swift, seamless transition from disaster recovery back to a fully operational shopping centre.

The works were procured through a hybrid arrangement, combining negotiation with supply chain and a competitive tender element in order to maximise the balance on construction cost and programme time.

Scope of works

The scope of works to fully re-open the shopping mall comprised:

  • dangerous structure remediation
  • MEP services
  • temporary works
  • food court
  • new roof structure and coverings
  • new façades to entrances
  • rebuilding of external walls
  • lifts and escalators
  • internal mall finishes
  • new guest amenities & WCs
  • new atrium glazing and internal finishes
  • new management suite and security offices.
